The coat that doubles as an electric blanket – but you wouldn’t know it.

Every morning we wish it was a bring-your-duvet-to-work-day, and now we’re one step closer to office-friendly duvet dressing thanks to the ‘smart coat’.  British label Emel and Aris has created a coat which doubles as an electric blanket, thanks to advances in wearable tech.

The two tailored heated coats are elegant and classic, and you wouldn’t know that they are installed with secret infrared technology.

So how does it work? There is a lightweight polymer layer hidden in the lining of the coat and a battery pack concealed in the pocket. There are three levels of heat options, low, medium and high, and the magic coat can even double as an iPhone charge, with a hidden USB charging port.

Founder Rana Nakhal Solset  says of the design: “The first and most important thing for me was fabrics, it all has to be breathable – cashmere, wool, cottons. All the fabrics are treated to be wind and rain resistant so they are very durable.”

A coat that doubles as a radiator might sound like a fire hazard, but infrared rays are 100 per cent safe and they claim that the infrared heats the muscles to increase blood flow.

The coat is launching on funding platform Kickstarter on Friday, where between March 12-13 you will be able to pre-order the coat with 50 per cent off and receive it next autumn. On Kickstarter the women’s trench coat will be reduced from £1,095 to £450 and the women’s wrap coat will be reduced from £1,295 to £595.
