INVEST IN THIS SERIOUSLY SMART, SELF-HEATING COAT BEFORE NEXT WINTER HITS

By Zak Maoui, 11th March 2016

Wearable tech is becoming ever more, well, wearable. However, it’s not just your wrist where fashion and technology are synching up – now Emel and Aris are launching a sleek new coat that uses in-built, battery-powered heating technology to keep you warm in the most stylish way possible.

Launching on kickstarter.com today (for the next 60 days), the idea is the brainchild of designer Rana Nakhal Solset. The men’s model comes in three styles: a lighter rain mac and two topcoats, one cut from a cashmere, wool and cotton blend and the other from supremely luxurious 100 per cent cashmere woven by legendary Italian mill Loro Piana (the world’s largest manufacturers of the supersoft stuff).

However, apart from the ultra-insulating properties in cashmere itself, how does this garment keep you warm? The coats are specially designed to conduct FIR (infrared) heat from emitters on the shoulders, sides and lower back, which is absorbed by the wool fibres (no wires necessary) to keep the whole coat toasty warm for up to 9 hours.

To power this tech, each coat is fitted with a removable, iPhone-slim battery pack which sits comfortably in the inside breast pocket – and even has a USB outlet to charge your phone. Talk about a smart coat.
